designed in 1982 and revisited in 2024

Designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1982, the Experiment chair is an exploration of form and function, symbolising the optimism of postmodern design while showcasing the ergonomic innovation that defines Kukkapuro’s work.

The chair’s structure has a tubular frame with armrests crafted from lacquered plywood, achieving both stability and visual lightness. Upholstered in leather or fabric, its design is distinguished by wooden armrests with dynamic, wavy forms that complement its geometric base. These shapes introduce a sense of energy and movement, epitomising the exploratory spirit of postmodernism. Reintroduced for contemporary audiences in 2024, the updated chair remains true to its character while incorporating refinements such as a flat-pack mechanism and a subtle resizing for modern needs.

Created during a prolific period in Kukkapuro’s career, the Experiment chair exemplifies his ambition to merge artistic expression with Functionalism. As a symbol of postmodern optimism, it positions design as a forward-looking force that balances creativity with human-centred thinking.
