Karuselli

1964

The Karuselli chair, designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1964, is a demonstration of his dedication to ergonomic excellence and sculptural form.
The Karuselli chair is constructed from a fiberglass shell paired with leather upholstery, creating a balance of durability and comfort. Kukkapuro chose the materials not only for their functional properties but also for their ability to accentuate the chair’s organic form. The chair’s design reveals meticulous attention to detail, resulting in contours that provide natural support.Â
Karuselli is the result of years of experimentation, during which Kukkapuro developed its iconic shape using an innovative hands-on approach. To achieve the dimensions for Karuselli, Kukkapuro wrapped chicken wire around his body and created a plaster cast of his body in a lounging posture so that the final design would meet his exacting ergonomic standards. This personal and experimental process defines the chair as an icon in human-centred design.
